Qu'est-ce (qui) est isostasy - définition

STATE OF GRAVITATIONAL EQUILIBRIUM BETWEEN EARTH'S CRUST AND MANTLE
Isostacy; Land rise; Isostatic theory; Pratt hypothesis; Airy hypothesis; Isostatic equilibrium; Depth of compensation; Isostatic anomaly
  • Airy isostasy, in which a constant-density crust floats on a higher-density mantle, and topography is determined by the thickness of the crust.
  • Airy isostasy applied to a real-case basin scenario, where the total load on the mantle is composed by a crustal basement, lower-density sediments and overlying marine water

isostasy
[??'s?st?si]
¦ noun Geology the equilibrium that exists between parts of the earth's crust, which rise if material (such as an ice cap) is removed and sink if material is deposited.

isostatic adjective
Origin
C19: from iso- + Gk stasis 'station'.
Isostasy
·add. ·noun The state or quality of being isostatic.
II. Isostasy ·add. ·noun general equilibrium in the earth's crust, supposed to be maintained by the yielding or flow of rock material beneath the surface under gravitative stress. By the theory of isostasy each unit column of the earth, from surface to center, has approximately the same weight, and the continents stand higher than the ocean beds chiefly because the material of the crust has there less density.
Lithospheric flexure
REGIONAL ISOSTASY
Flexural isostasy
Lithospheric flexure (also called regional isostasy) is the process by which the lithosphere (rigid, thin outer layer of the Earth) bends under the action of forces such as the weight of a growing orogeny or changes in ice thickness related to glaciation. The lithosphere rests on the asthenosphere, a viscous layer that in geological time scales behaves like a fluid.

Isostasy

Isostasy (Greek ísos "equal", stásis "standstill") or isostatic equilibrium is the state of gravitational equilibrium between Earth's crust (or lithosphere) and mantle such that the crust "floats" at an elevation that depends on its thickness and density. This concept is invoked to explain how different topographic heights can exist at Earth's surface. Although originally defined in terms of continental crust and mantle, it has subsequently been interpreted in terms of lithosphere and asthenosphere, particularly with respect to oceanic island volcanoes, such as the Hawaiian Islands.

Although Earth is a dynamic system that responds to loads in many different ways, isostasy describes the important limiting case in which crust and mantle are in static equilibrium. Certain areas (such as the Himalayas and other convergent margins) are not in isostatic equilibrium and are not well described by isostatic models.

The general term 'isostasy' was coined in 1882 by the American geologist Clarence Dutton.
